This is an 18-month-prospective AS1842856 study of patients taking bisphosphonates, referred to a regional Maxillofacial Surgery Unit for dento-alveolar surgery. The following variables were recorded: age, gender, reason for referral, bisphosphonate type, indication for and duration of bisphosphonate treatment, medical co-morbidities, CTX value, development of BRONJ, and follow-up period.

23 patients underwent a fasting CTX test. The mean age was 59 years (range, 44-78 years). Nineteen were taking alendronic acid, two risedronate sodium and two zoledronic acid. The mean duration of bisphosphonate treatment was 30 months

(range, 8-72 months). The mean CTX value was 180 pg/ml (range, 50-370 pg/ml), with 11 patients having a value at or less than 150 pg/ml. The mean follow-up period was 5 months (range, 3-11 months). None of the patients, who underwent removal of one or more teeth, subsequently developed BRONJ.

The CTX test was not predictive for the development of BRONJ following oral surgery.”
“Endemic

malaria has been eradicated from France, but some falciparum selleck kinase inhibitor malaria cases have been described in patients who have never travelled outside the country. Ms. V. 21 year-old and Mr. M. 23 year-old living together in Paris were on holiday in Saint Raphae (French Riviera). They presented with fever, vertigo and nausea. A blood smear made to control thrombocytopaenia revealed intra-erythrocytic forms of Plasmodium falciparum. The parasitaemia level was 0.15% for Ms. V and 3.2% for Mr. M. This couple had no history of blood transfusion or intravenous drug use. They had never travelled outside metropolitan France, but had recently travelled around France: to Saint Mard (close to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CdG) airport), to Barneville plage (in Normandy) and finally to Saint Raphael. The most probable hypothesis is an infection transmitted in Saint Mard by an imported anopheline mosquito at CdG airport. The DNA analysis

of parasites from Ms. V.’s and Mr. M.’s blood revealed identical genotypes. Because it is unlikely that two different anopheline mosquitoes would be infected by exactly the same clones, the two infections must have been PI3K inhibitor caused by the infective bites of the same infected mosquito.”
“Background: Reduced physical fitness has been reported to occur after lung transplantation. Pre- and post-transplant factors, including an inactive lifestyle, have been proposed as possible causes. However, daily physical activity has not been objectively assessed so far in lung recipients. The purpose of this study was to objectively measure daily physical activity in lung recipients.

Methods: Twenty-two clinically stable patients with single (n = 7) and bilateral lung grafts (n = 15) underwent measurements of physical activity with activity monitors at least 12 months after surgery. Results were compared with findings from 22 healthy, age- and gender-matched control subjects.
